Authorities recovered the bodies of three Hondurans who drowned last night in the Mississippi River

(LPL) – Three bodies were recovered Wednesday by Shelby County deputies following an intensive search in the Mississippi River. The men had been reported missing Tuesday night, when they were last seen swimming and fishing near a sandbar in Meeman-Shelby Forest State Park in the northwest part of the county.

The search began around 7:15 p.m. Tuesday, but had to be suspended after three hours due to poor visibility. The search resumed this morning, and around 11:40 a.m., the first two bodies were located. The third was found hours later.

Authorities have not yet officially confirmed the identities of the victims, but it was unofficially learned that the three were Hondurans and their names were Marlon Méndez, Rudy Pérez, and Francis Yáñez. The causes of death will be determined by the medical examiner after autopsies are performed.

The search operation involved several agencies, including the sheriff’s Search and Rescue team, the Department of Homeland Security, fire departments from Shelby, Millington, and Tipton County, as well as specialized units from the Memphis Police Department and representatives from Tennessee State Parks.
