El abuelo de la víctima, Evaniel Johnson, afirmó que no aceptará la versión oficial sin antes ver las grabaciones. “Muéstrenme el video. Por favor, muéstrenmelo. Si el video confirma lo que dicen, lo aceptaré. Pero hasta que no lo vea, seguiré luchando por mi nieto”, declaró.

(LPL) – The family of Tyrin Johnson—the 20-year-old who died after being shot by Tennessee National Guard members during a pursuit in downtown Memphis—is demanding that authorities release video footage of the incident to clarify exactly what happened.

The victim’s grandfather, Evaniel Johnson, stated that he would not accept the official account without first seeing the recordings. “Show me the video. Please, show it to me. If the video confirms what they say, I’ll accept it. But until I see it, I’ll keep fighting for my grandson,” he declared.

The shooting occurred in the early hours of July 5, as National Guard soldiers and Memphis Police Department officers were responding to a report of gunfire downtown. According to the initial police account, Johnson fled on foot and subsequently turned toward the soldiers with a firearm, prompting two National Guard members to open fire. However, the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation (TBI), which is investigating the case, has not confirmed that detail, noting only that the circumstances leading to the use of force remain under investigation.

The family maintains that Johnson did not pose the threat described by authorities. His grandfather explained that the young man carried a weapon for self-protection after having been assaulted recently in Nashville; he described Johnson as a college student and father of a young child who was preparing to join the family’s real estate and construction business. He also insisted that his grandson “was not a criminal.”

Family members reported that TBI investigators told them Johnson was shot twice in the chest, although authorities have not publicly confirmed how many shots were fired or whether there is any body-worn camera, surveillance, or other footage documenting the incident.

The case has sparked calls for a transparent investigation. Tennessee Senate Democratic leaders Raumesh Akbari and London Lamar have asked the TBI to release any available video as soon as possible without compromising the investigation. The ACLU of Tennessee and State Representative Justin Pearson also called for an open investigation and questioned the continued operation of the federal task force in Memphis, which is supported by the National Guard.

This marks the first known fatal shooting involving National Guard soldiers since they were deployed to Memphis as part of the Memphis Safe Task Force, an initiative launched to bolster the fight against crime in the city.
