Indignación por arrestos de ICE en cortes de Tennessee: TIRRC denuncia patrón preocupante

(LPL) – La Coalición para los Derechos de Inmigrantes y Refugiados de Tennessee (TIRRC por sus siglas en inglés) condenó enérgicamente los recientes arrestos realizados por agentes de U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) en las afueras de los tribunales del condado de Wilson, en el centro de Tennessee, señalando que forman parte de un patrón “preocupante y en aumento”.

Los señalamientos surgen luego de que en redes sociales circulara un video que muestra un arresto violento frente al tribunal, donde una persona fue sometida por varios agentes vestidos de civil tras presentar a respondedor una infracción de tránsito.

De acuerdo con TIRRC, varias de las personas detenidas acudieron a la corte de buena fe para atender a multas menores, y en muchos casos cuentan con procesos migratorios pendientes, por lo que no estarían sujetas a una deportación inmediata. La organización calificó las imágenes como “profundamente perturbadoras” y afirmó que este tipo de acciones socavan la confianza en el sistema judicial.

Lisa Sherman Luna, directora ejecutiva de la coalición, sostuvo que todas las personas, sin importar su estatus migratorio, merecen un trato justo y acceso seguro a los tribunales. Además, criticó que quienes buscan resolver infracciones menores terminen siendo arrestados, y cuestionó que estos operativos se llevan a cabo en espacios judiciales.

TIRRC también advirtió que incidentes similares se han registrado recientemente en otros condados, como Robertson, lo que estaría generando temor entre la comunidad inmigrante y desincentivando la asistencia a audiencias judiciales.

Por su parte, la Oficina del Sheriff del Condado de Wilson declaró que ICE opera de manera independiente como agencia federal y que sus acciones no son dirigidas por autoridades locales, aunque reconoció que cumple con retenciones migratorias conforme a la ley estatal cuando corresponde.

(LPL) – The Tennessee Immigrant & Refugee Rights Coalition (TIRRC) has strongly condemned recent arrests carried out by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents outside the Wilson County courthouses in central Tennessee, noting that these incidents are part of a “troubling and escalating” pattern.

These allegations follow the circulation on social media of a video depicting a violent arrest outside the courthouse, in which an individual was subdued by several plainclothes agents after appearing to answer to a traffic infraction.

According to TIRRC, several of the detained individuals had gone to court in good faith to address minor fines; in many cases, they have pending immigration proceedings and therefore would not be subject to immediate deportation. The organization described the footage as “deeply disturbing” and asserted that such actions undermine trust in the judicial system.

Lisa Sherman Luna, the coalition’s executive director, maintained that all individuals—regardless of their immigration status—deserve fair treatment and safe access to the courts. Furthermore, she criticized the fact that individuals seeking to resolve minor infractions end up being arrested, and she questioned the appropriateness of conducting such operations within judicial spaces.

TIRRC also warned that similar incidents have recently been reported in other counties—such as Robertson County—creating fear within the immigrant community and discouraging attendance at court hearings.

For its part, the Wilson County Sheriff’s Office clarified that ICE operates independently as a federal agency and that its actions are not directed by local authorities, although the office acknowledged that it complies with immigration detainers in accordance with state law when applicable.
