Liberan bajo fianza a periodista colombiana que estaba detenida por ICE

(LPL) – La periodista colombiana Estefany Rodríguez Flórez, fue liberada de custodia tras permanecer más de dos semanas detenida por el Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), informaron este jueves sus representantes legales.

De acuerdo con la Tennessee Immigrant and Refugee Rights Coalition (TIRRC), la reportera de Nashville Noticias obtuvo su libertad luego de pagar una fianza de 10 mil dólares y actualmente se encuentra en camino de regreso a Tennessee desde el centro de detención en Luisiana donde permanecía retenida.

El abogado Mike Holley, quien lleva su caso en una corte federal, señaló que el equipo legal continuará con el proceso judicial en curso, enfocado en una petición de habeas corpus presentada el pasado 4 de marzo. Según explicó, esta acción legal cuestiona tanto el arresto sin orden judicial como una posible represalia por el ejercicio de sus derechos bajo la Primera Enmienda.

“Buscamos no solo su liberación total, sino también una orden que impida que ICE vuelva a tratarla de manera similar en el futuro”, indicó el abogado.

El caso ha generado atención luego de que las autoridades migratorias argumentaran que Rodríguez permaneció en el país más tiempo del permitido por su visa de turista y que no se presentó a dos citas migratorias. Sin embargo, su esposo ha ofrecido una versión distinta, asegurando que la primera cita fue reprogramada debido a una tormenta invernal en enero y que, al acudir a la segunda, les informaron que no existía registro de la misma, indicándoles regresar el 17 de marzo.

Mientras el proceso legal continúa, la defensa insiste en que hubo irregularidades en la detención de la periodista y busca que el caso siente un precedente sobre el trato a personas bajo custodia migratoria.

Colombian Journalist Detained by ICE Released on Bail

(LPL) – Colombian journalist Estefany Rodríguez Flórez has been released from custody after being detained for more than two weeks by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), her legal representatives reported this Thursday.

According to the Tennessee Immigrant and Refugee Rights Coalition (TIRRC), the Nashville Noticias reporter secured her release after posting a $10,000 bond and is currently on her way back to Tennessee from the detention center in Louisiana where she had been held.

Attorney Mike Holley, who is handling her case in federal court, noted that the legal team will continue with the ongoing judicial proceedings, focusing on a habeas corpus petition filed on March 4. As he explained, this legal action challenges both her warrantless arrest and the possibility that her detention was an act of retaliation for exercising her First Amendment rights.

“We are seeking not only her full release but also a court order preventing ICE from treating her in a similar manner in the future,” the attorney stated.

The case has garnered significant attention after immigration authorities argued that Rodríguez had overstayed her tourist visa and failed to appear for two scheduled immigration appointments. However, her husband has offered a different account, asserting that the first appointment was rescheduled due to a winter storm in January, and that when they arrived for the second appointment, they were informed that there was no record of it and were instructed to return on March 17.

As the legal process continues, the defense maintains that there were irregularities in the journalist’s detention and seeks to establish a legal precedent regarding the treatment of individuals held in immigration custody.
