Más de 60 personas murieron en devastador incendio en un hipermercado de Irak

(LPL/AFP) -La cifra de muertos en el devastador incendio desatado anoche en un hipermercado de la ciudad de Kut, capital de la provincia de Wasit, al sureste de Bagdad, aumentó a al menos 63 y los heridos a 40, informó este jueves la agencia oficial de noticias iraquí INA, que cita a fuentes sanitarias.

“El número de muertos por el incendio de Kut ha aumentado a 63 y 40 los heridos”, aseguró escuetamente INA, según fuentes médicas no identificadas.

Por su parte, el ministro del Interior iraquí, Abdulamir al Shammari, dijo en un comunicado que el edificio en el que se registró el incendio, que llevaba abierto desde hace sólo siete días, es de cinco plantas, y albergaba un restaurante y un hipermercado.

El responsable indicó que la mayoría de los fallecidos “se asfixiaron en los baños debido al denso humo”, mientras que catorce cadáveres fueron encontrados “carbonizados”.

Asimismo, apuntó que, “a pesar de la gravedad de la situación, los equipos de Defensa Civil lograron rescatar a más de 45 personas atrapadas en el interior del edificio”.

Ordenó la formación de un comité de investigación “de alto nivel” para descubrir “las verdaderas causas del incendio”, e identificar “con precisión y transparencia” las áreas que han fallado y la responsabilidad civil.

Señaló que “los resultados de las exhaustivas investigaciones técnicas se anunciarán inmediatamente después de su finalización, en consonancia con el compromiso del Ministerio con el principio de total transparencia ante el público”, sin dar una fecha.

Entretanto, el gobernador de Wasit, Mohamed Yamil al Mayah, dijo en un comunicado que publicarán los resultados de la “investigación preliminar en 48 horas”.

Por otro lado, una fuente de la Defensa Civil, citada por INA, afirmó que el incendio en el hipermercado quedó “completamente extinguido”.

“Los equipos han comenzado la búsqueda de desaparecidos dentro del edificio comercial”, aseveró.

En Irak son habituales los incendios en instalaciones, especialmente con el aumento de las temperaturas del verano y debido a la falta de mantenimiento y al pobre estado de la infraestructura de un país que todavía está en proceso de reconstrucción tras décadas de guerra y violencia sectaria.

Uno de los fuegos más mortales de los últimos años ocurrió a finales de septiembre de 2023, cuando 114 personas fallecieron y más de 200 resultaron heridas por un incendio en la sala donde se festejaba una boda en la provincia de Nínive, en el norte de Irak.

For his part, Iraqi Interior Minister Abdulamir al-Shammari said in a statement that the building where the fire broke out, which had been raging for only seven days, is five stories high and housed a restaurant and a hypermarket.

The official indicated that most of the deceased “suffocated in the bathrooms due to the dense smoke,” while 14 bodies were found “charred.”

He also noted that, “despite the seriousness of the situation, Civil Defense teams managed to rescue more than 45 people trapped inside the building.”

He ordered the formation of a “high-level” investigation committee to uncover “the true causes of the fire” and to identify “precisely and transparently” the areas of failure and civil liability.

He noted that “the results of the exhaustive technical investigations will be announced immediately upon completion, in line with the Ministry’s commitment to the principle of full transparency to the public,” without giving a date.

Meanwhile, the governor of Wasit, Mohamed Yamil al-Mayah, said in a statement that they would publish the results of the “preliminary investigation within 48 hours.”

Separately, a Civil Defense source, quoted by INA, stated that the fire at the hypermarket was “completely extinguished.”

“Teams have begun searching for missing persons inside the commercial building,” he stated.

Fires in facilities are common in Iraq, especially with rising summer temperatures and due to lack of maintenance and the poor state of infrastructure in a country still rebuilding after decades of war and sectarian violence.

One of the deadliest fires in recent years occurred in late September 2023, when 114 people died and more than 200 were injured in a blaze at a wedding venue in Nineveh Province, northern Iraq.
