Organizaciones locales convocan a “Un Día Sin Inmigrantes” en Memphis para este 1 de mayo

(LPL) – Organizaciones comunitarias como Vecindarios901 y MICAH están convocando a la comunidad inmigrante a participar en la jornada “Un Día Sin Inmigrantes”, programada para el viernes 1 de mayo de 2026.

La iniciativa surge como respuesta a lo que consideran una serie de injusticias que afectan a la comunidad inmigrante, incluyendo deportaciones masivas, detenciones durante paradas de tráfico, interrupciones en el ámbito laboral, obstáculos a la educación de los hijos y la promoción de leyes antiinmigrantes en el estado de Tennessee.

Como parte de esta movilización, los organizadores han planteado tres demandas principales: el retiro de la “Memphis Safe Task Force”, incluyendo la participación de la Tennessee Highway Patrol y la Guardia Nacional; el fin de la separación de familias; y la eliminación de leyes antiinmigrantes en el estado.

La convocatoria busca que la comunidad ejerza distintas formas de participación y presión social, destacando el poder electoral, laboral, estudiantil, de no cooperación y de los negocios inmigrantes. Entre las acciones propuestas para ese día se incluyen no asistir al trabajo, no enviar a los hijos a la escuela, cerrar negocios y evitar realizar compras.

Además, se está promoviendo que las familias se comprometan públicamente a participar y a invitar a otras a sumarse al movimiento, incluso organizando reuniones comunitarias previas para ampliar el alcance de la jornada.

Los organizadores aseguran que el objetivo es visibilizar el impacto de la comunidad inmigrante y generar presión colectiva para que sus demandas sean escuchadas.

Local organizations call for “A Day Without Immigrants” in Memphis for May 1st

(LPL) – Community organizations such as Vecindarios901 and MICAH are calling upon the immigrant community to participate in the “A Day Without Immigrants” initiative, scheduled for Friday, May 1, 2026.

The initiative emerges in response to what they view as a series of injustices affecting the immigrant community, including mass deportations, detentions during traffic stops, disruptions in the workplace, barriers to children’s education, and the promotion of anti-immigrant laws in the state of Tennessee.

As part of this mobilization, organizers have put forward three main demands: the withdrawal of the “Memphis Safe Task Force”—including the participation of the Tennessee Highway Patrol and the National Guard—an end to family separations, and the repeal of anti-immigrant laws within the state.

The call to action encourages the community to exercise various forms of participation and social pressure, highlighting the collective power of voters, workers, students, non-cooperation, and immigrant-owned businesses. Proposed actions for the day include staying home from work, keeping children home from school, closing businesses, and refraining from making purchases.

Furthermore, families are being encouraged to publicly pledge their participation and to invite others to join the movement, including by organizing preparatory community meetings to broaden the reach of the initiative.

Organizers assert that the objective is to highlight the impact of the immigrant community and to generate collective pressure to ensure their demands are heard.
