Papa León XIV pide reabrir el diálogo para una paz justa en Medio Oriente

(LPL/EFE) – El papa León XIV tuvo una conversación telefónica con el presidente de Israel, Isaac Herzog, en la que defendió la “necesidad de reabrir” canales de diálogo para alcanzar una “paz justa” en Medio Oriente.
“Durante el coloquio, se ha defendido la necesidad de reabrir todos los canales posibles de diálogo diplomático para poner fin al grave conflicto en curso, en busca de una paz justa y duradera en todo Oriente Medio”, según informó el Vaticano en un comunicado.
Y agrega: “A lo largo de la conversación se han detenido en la importancia de proteger a la población civil y de promover el respeto del derecho internacional y humanitario”.

La conversación ha tenido lugar con motivo de la Semana Santa y se produce cinco días después de que la policía israelí impidiera celebrar la misa del Domingo de Ramos en el Santo Sepulcro de Jerusalén al cardenal Pierbattista Pizzaballa.

Un día después, el pasado lunes, el secretario de Estado vaticano, Pietro Parolin, convocó al embajador israelí ante la Santa Sede, Yaron Sideman, para quejarse sobre este “desafortunado” caso.
Aquel gesto inédito generó una fuerte condena internacional que obligó al primer ministro israelí, Benjamín Netanyahu, a comparecer para aclarar que el cardenal y patriarca latino de Jerusalén podría acceder al templo.
Por su parte, Herzog también ha informado de esta conversación con el pontífice en su perfil de X asegurando que, además de intercambiarse las felicitaciones de la Pascua cristiana y del Pésaj judío, hablaron de cuestiones como la actual guerra de Irán o en Líbano.

El pontífice estadounidense se encuentra actualmente inmerso en las celebraciones de su primera Semana Santa como papa y esta noche presidirá el viacrucis en el Vaticano.

En sus homilías, León XIV denuncia la guerra que sacude el mundo y los atropellos de las autoridades, aunque sin citar a nadie en concreto.

Pope Leo XIV Calls for Reopening Dialogue for a Just Peace in the Middle East

(LPL/EFE) – Pope Leo XIV held a telephone conversation with Israeli President Isaac Herzog, in which he advocated for the “need to reopen” channels of dialogue to achieve a “just peace” in the Middle East.
“During the conversation, the need to reopen all possible channels of diplomatic dialogue was emphasized in order to put an end to the grave ongoing conflict, in pursuit of a just and lasting peace throughout the entire Middle East,” the Vatican reported in a statement.
It added: “Throughout the conversation, they focused on the importance of protecting the civilian population and promoting respect for international and humanitarian law.”

The conversation took place on the occasion of Holy Week and comes five days after Israeli police prevented Cardinal Pierbattista Pizzaballa from celebrating Palm Sunday Mass at the Church of the Holy Sepulchre in Jerusalem.

One day later—last Monday—the Vatican Secretary of State, Pietro Parolin, summoned the Israeli Ambassador to the Holy See, Yaron Sideman, to lodge a complaint regarding this “unfortunate” incident.
That unprecedented move sparked strong international condemnation, compelling Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to issue a statement clarifying that the Cardinal and Latin Patriarch of Jerusalem would indeed be granted access to the shrine.
For his part, Herzog also reported on this conversation with the Pontiff via his X profile, noting that—in addition to exchanging greetings for the Christian Easter and the Jewish Passover—they discussed issues such as the current conflicts involving Iran and Lebanon.

The American Pontiff is currently immersed in the celebrations of his first Holy Week as Pope; this evening, he will preside over the Stations of the Cross at the Vatican.

In his homilies, Leo XIV denounces the warfare shaking the world and the abuses committed by authorities, though without citing anyone specifically.
