Memphis Police announce closure of Legends Lounge nightclub due to pattern of violence and criminal activity
(LPL) – The Memphis Police Department (MPD), in coordination with the city and the Shelby County District Attorney’s Office, initiated proceedings to close Legends Lounge—an establishment located at 6232 Knight Arnold Road—due to a documented history of violence and criminal activity at the site and in the surrounding area.
According to the MPD, 58 incidents related to the establishment have been recorded since March 15, 2023. These include six aggravated assaults involving firearms and one homicide.
Investigators also identified seven other incidents stemming from altercations linked to the club, including disputes that spilled over into a nearby gas station and shootings that occurred after individuals had left the premises.
This action is part of a long-term investigation conducted by the MPD’s Organized Crime Unit, following continued reports of fights, aggravated assaults, drug-related activity, and other offenses.
On April 24, 2026, authorities formally notified the business operators under Tennessee law regarding the abatement of establishments deemed public nuisances. The notice was served in person by MPD officers.
However, according to the police, the criminal activity persisted. On July 23, 2026, another assault occurred on the property, resulting in criminal charges.
The investigation culminated on August 9, when detectives from the Organized Crime Unit and partner agencies executed a search warrant at Legends Lounge.
During the operation, officers found more than 300 people inside the establishment, despite the venue having a maximum permitted capacity of 99 people.
The intervention resulted in several arrests and the identification of employees with outstanding arrest warrants. Investigators also encountered armed security personnel who, according to the MPD, were working without the required state license. Additionally, authorities reported finding evidence linked to suspected illegal narcotics activity and the illicit sale of alcohol. More than $7,000 in cash was seized, as there was probable cause to believe the money was connected to illegal drug activity.
Violence persisted even after police interventions. On September 20 and 21, 2026, two separate shootings occurred in the vicinity of the establishment, leaving several people injured. One victim sustained critical injuries.
The MPD noted that these incidents took place after the business operators had already been formally notified regarding the history of criminal activity associated with the establishment.
MPD Chief C.J. Davis stated that the problem is not limited to what occurs inside the business but also affects nearby properties and individuals.
“When a business becomes a constant source of violence and criminal activity, it doesn’t just affect the people inside that establishment,” Davis said. “It affects nearby businesses, the neighborhood, and the people who live and work in that community.”
For his part, Shelby County District Attorney Steve Mulroy noted that the closure is the result of an accumulated pattern rather than a single incident.
“When a business generates more incidents than comparable businesses, it is a concern. When there is a series of violations, it is a priority. When the incidents are violent, we act quickly,” Mulroy stated.
The MPD indicated it would continue working with the city, the Shelby County District Attorney’s Office, and other agencies to take action against establishments where repeated criminal activity poses a threat to public safety.
