TPS para venezolanos expira hoy, dejando a miles sin protección

(LPL) – Desde la medianoche de este viernes, cerca de 250.000 venezolanos en Estados Unidos quedaron sin protección migratoria tras expirar el Estatus de Protección Temporal (TPS), un beneficio humanitario que permitía a sus beneficiarios vivir y trabajar legalmente en el país. La medida se dio luego de un fallo de la Corte Suprema y la decisión del Gobierno de Donald Trump de poner fin al programa.

El fin del TPS deja a cientos de miles de familias en un limbo legal y con temor a posibles deportaciones. Semanas atrás, aproximadamente 350.000 venezolanos que habían recibido la extensión del programa en 2023 ya habían perdido su amparo, y ahora el resto de los beneficiarios originales, designados en 2021, enfrentan la misma situación.

El Servicio de Ciudadanía e Inmigración de Estados Unidos (USCIS) advirtió en su portal que los venezolanos protegidos bajo el TPS deben “prepararse para regresar a Venezuela si no tienen otra base legal para permanecer en el país”.

El programa fue implementado en 2021 por el Gobierno de Joe Biden, con el fin de ofrecer refugio temporal a los venezolanos ante la crisis política y económica en su país, y fue extendido dos años después. Sin embargo, el Gobierno de Trump consideró recientemente que la situación en Venezuela había mostrado “mejoras notables en varias áreas” y decidió no renovar la protección.

Aunque un tribunal federal de California bloqueó temporalmente la cancelación del TPS en marzo, la Corte Suprema falló a favor del Gobierno de Trump, permitiendo que el programa llegara a su fin.

Organizaciones como la Alianza Nacional TPS instan a los afectados a buscar asesoría legal lo antes posible para explorar alternativas migratorias que les permitan permanecer en Estados Unidos de manera regular.

TPS for Venezuelans expires today, leaving thousands without protection

(LPL) – As of midnight Friday, nearly 250,000 Venezuelans in the United States lost their immigration protection following the expiration of Temporary Protected Status (TPS), a humanitarian program that had allowed them to live and work legally in the country. The measure follows a Supreme Court ruling and a decision by the Trump administration to end the program.

The end of TPS leaves hundreds of thousands of families in legal limbo and facing the fear of deportation. Just weeks earlier, around 350,000 Venezuelans who had received the program’s 2023 extension also lost their protection. Now, the remaining beneficiaries originally designated in 2021 face the same fate.

The U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) warned on its website that Venezuelans under TPS should “prepare to return to Venezuela if they have no other legal basis to remain in the country.”

The program was first implemented in 2021 by the Biden administration to offer temporary refuge to Venezuelans fleeing political and economic turmoil in their home country and was extended in 2023. However, the Trump administration recently argued that “notable improvements in several areas” justified ending the designation.

Although a federal court in California temporarily blocked the cancellation in March, the Supreme Court twice ruled in favor of the Trump administration, allowing TPS for Venezuelans to officially end.

Organizations such as the National TPS Alliance are urging affected individuals to seek immediate legal advice to explore alternative immigration options that could allow them to stay in the U.S. lawfully.
