Veteranos en Memphis rechazan la militarización y las redadas de ICE

(LPL) – Decenas de veteranos se reunieron la tarde del martes 11 de noviembre en el Robert Church Park para expresar su rechazo a lo que describen como “la militarización de Memphis” y el aumento de la presencia federal en la ciudad.

El evento, denominado “Veterans Say No”, forma parte de un movimiento nacional impulsado por organizaciones como Common Defense, Remember Your Oath, Sons of Liberty y la campaña Free the 901. Su objetivo es generar conciencia sobre el papel creciente de agencias federales como ICE y exigir responsabilidad a las autoridades locales y nacionales.

Jonathan Delgado, veterano de la Marina con seis años de servicio, advirtió sobre el uso inapropiado de las fuerzas militares en asuntos civiles. “La Guardia Nacional está para emergencias y desastres naturales, no para formar parte de la vida diaria de la ciudad. Esto no es lo que firmamos cuando servimos”, señaló.

Otros oradores coincidieron en que el despliegue de fuerzas federales representa una amenaza para la democracia y los derechos civiles. Chase Madkins, también veterano naval, afirmó que “responder con militares a problemas derivados de la pobreza no es la solución”.

Entre los asistentes estuvo el representante estatal Justin J. Pearson, quien expresó su respaldo al movimiento. “Debemos acompañar a nuestros veteranos en su rechazo a la ocupación que estamos viendo en nuestra comunidad. La presencia de ICE genera miedo y afecta a nuestras familias latinas”, dijo.

Los organizadores anunciaron que continuarán fortaleciendo una coalición de veteranos, líderes comunitarios y organizaciones civiles para exigir el fin de la militarización y defender los derechos de las comunidades más vulnerables.

Veterans in Memphis Reject Militarization and ICE Raids

(LPL) – Dozens of veterans gathered Tuesday evening, November 11, at Robert Church Park to voice their opposition to what they describe as “the militarization of Memphis” and the growing federal presence in the city.

The event, called “Veterans Say No,” is part of a national movement led by organizations such as Common Defense, Remember Your Oath, Sons of Liberty, and the Free the 901 Campaign. Its goal is to raise awareness about the expanding role of federal agencies like ICE and demand accountability from local and national authorities.

Jonathan Delgado, a Navy veteran who served six years, warned against the misuse of military forces in civilian matters. “The National Guard is meant for emergencies and natural disasters, not to be part of our city’s daily life. This is not what we signed up for,” he said.

Other speakers agreed that the deployment of federal forces represents a threat to democracy and civil rights. Navy veteran Chase Madkins stated, “Responding with military action to issues rooted in poverty is not the solution.”

Tennessee state Rep. Justin J. Pearson also attended the rally, expressing support for veterans calling for change. “We must stand with our veterans as they reject the occupation happening in our community. ICE’s presence creates fear and harms our Latino families,” he said.

Organizers announced they will continue building a coalition of veterans, community leaders, and civic organizations to demand an end to militarization and defend the rights of vulnerable communities.
