Policía de Memphis publica video del momento en que un oficial fue baleado durante parada de tráfico

(LPL) – El Departamento de Policía de Memphis (MPD) dio a conocer este martes el video captado por la cámara corporal del oficial Oscar Torres-Molina, mostrando el momento en que fue baleado durante una parada de tráfico ocurrida el pasado 26 de febrero en el área de Parkway Village.

De acuerdo con las autoridades, el incidente ocurrió alrededor de las 8 p.m. cerca de South Perkins Road y Aloha Avenue, cuando Torres-Molina detuvo un vehículo conducido por Danell Jarvis Maxwell, de 40 años.

En las imágenes difundidas por MPD, el oficial conversa con Maxwell y le pide permiso para registrar el automóvil. Maxwell accede y también le informa al agente que porta un arma de fuego. Mientras ambos caminaban hacia la patrulla, Torres-Molina le preguntó sobre un número de identificación vehicular (VIN) que aparentemente había sido raspado en una de las puertas del vehículo.

Segundos después, el video muestra a Maxwell girando repentinamente con un arma en la mano y disparando contra el oficial. Torres-Molina cayó al suelo tras recibir un disparo en el rostro.

Las autoridades informaron que el oficial fue hospitalizado durante varios días y posteriormente dado de alta. MPD indicó la semana pasada que Torres-Molina continúa recuperándose de sus heridas.

Tras el tiroteo, Maxwell huyó del lugar y permaneció prófugo durante aproximadamente 70 días. Posteriormente fue agregado a la lista de los más buscados de la Oficina de Investigaciones de Tennessee (TBI).

El pasado 7 de mayo, agentes federales de U.S. Marshals lograron arrestarlo en un complejo de apartamentos en Cordova, donde presuntamente se escondía en un ático. Durante el operativo también fue detenida Tokeytha Owens, identificada como la novia de Maxwell.

Según la investigación, Owens inicialmente dijo a la policía que el vehículo conducido por Maxwell le pertenecía a ella. Aunque en ese momento solo fue interrogada, posteriormente fue acusada de ocultar a un fugitivo luego de que las autoridades encontraran a Maxwell dentro de su apartamento.

Maxwell compareció este martes ante un juez del condado Shelby y enfrenta cargos de intento de asesinato en primer grado y empleo de un arma de fuego durante la comisión de un delito peligroso. Actualmente permanece detenido con una fianza de 3 millones de dólares.

Las autoridades señalaron que Maxwell podría enfrentar entre 15 y 60 años de prisión si es declarado culpable. Además, la fiscalía ya presentó una moción solicitando cadena perpetua sin posibilidad de libertad condicional.

Memphis Police Release Video of Moment Officer Was Shot During Traffic Stop

(LPL) – The Memphis Police Department (MPD) released bodycam footage this Tuesday showing the moment Officer Oscar Torres-Molina was shot during a traffic stop that occurred on February 26 in the Parkway Village area.

According to authorities, the incident took place around 8 p.m. near South Perkins Road and Aloha Avenue, when Torres-Molina stopped a vehicle driven by Danell Jarvis Maxwell, 40.

In the footage released by the MPD, the officer is seen conversing with Maxwell and asking for permission to search the vehicle. Maxwell consents and also informs the officer that he is carrying a firearm. As the two walked toward the patrol car, Torres-Molina asked him about a Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) that appeared to have been scratched off one of the vehicle’s doors.

Seconds later, the video shows Maxwell suddenly turning around with a gun in his hand and firing at the officer. Torres-Molina fell to the ground after being shot in the face.

Authorities reported that the officer was hospitalized for several days and subsequently discharged. The MPD stated last week that Torres-Molina continues to recover from his injuries.

Following the shooting, Maxwell fled the scene and remained a fugitive for approximately 70 days. He was subsequently added to the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation’s (TBI) “Most Wanted” list.

On May 7, federal agents from the U.S. Marshals Service successfully arrested him at an apartment complex in Cordova, where he was allegedly hiding in an attic. During the operation, Tokeytha Owens—identified as Maxwell’s girlfriend—was also taken into custody.

According to the investigation, Owens initially told police that the vehicle driven by Maxwell belonged to her. Although she was only questioned at the time, she was later charged with harboring a fugitive after authorities located Maxwell inside her apartment. Maxwell appeared this Tuesday before a Shelby County judge and faces charges of attempted first-degree murder and the use of a firearm during the commission of a dangerous felony. He currently remains in custody on a $3 million bond.

Authorities indicated that Maxwell could face between 15 and 60 years in prison if found guilty. Furthermore, the prosecution has already filed a motion seeking life imprisonment without the possibility of parole.
