ICE Orders Increase in Daily Immigrant Detentions
(LPL/CNN) – Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) has ordered its agents across the United States to increase immigrant detentions by an additional 1,000 people per day, reverting to a target of 3,000 daily arrests, according to sources cited by CNN.
The directive was communicated verbally on Tuesday and represents a new uptick in the pace of the agency’s immigration operations. In recent weeks, ICE had been carrying out approximately 2,000 arrests per day.
Additionally, agents were instructed to aim for about 19,000 detentions per week. One source explained to CNN that this target helps explain why enforcement operations tend to slow down over the weekend.
The increase comes as President Donald Trump’s administration maintains its immigration enforcement campaign, despite concerns raised in some quarters regarding whom the agency is detaining.
In August, ICE carried out around 51,000 detentions—the highest monthly figure recorded during the Trump administration. The previous record had been set just a month earlier, with more than 46,000 arrests.
The agency is also seeking to expand its detention capacity. A recent contracting request indicates an urgent need for temporary infrastructure due to the high operational tempo and the rise in detentions.
The Department of Homeland Security denied the existence of arrest quotas and stated that agents are not penalized for failing to meet targets.
