From Hermosillo to Memphis: Karim López’s parents hope to see him make his debut with the Grizzlies
(LPL) – The excitement of seeing their son on an NBA court brought Hiram and Claudia López to the stands of the FedExForum on Wednesday for the Grizzlies’ season opener for the 2026-27 NBA season.
There, as the Grizzlies faced the Utah Jazz, the parents of Mexican player Karim López hoped for a chance to see him fulfill another one of his dreams: making his debut in the world’s premier basketball league.
Although the 19-year-old did not see any playing time during the game, his family was there to support him as he begins this new professional chapter. While the night didn’t end with the debut they had hoped for, they were still able to enjoy a 123-103 victory over the Utah Jazz and be by his side during a significant moment in his career.
“We’re very happy, though naturally a bit anxious. I kind of suspected he might not get the chance to debut today, but that’s okay—he just needs to keep preparing and improving every single day,” said Hiram, the player’s father.
For the family, the journey is only just beginning. Karim needs to adapt to the team’s dynamics, continue his preparation, and earn a spot in the coach’s rotation. His father is well aware of this and highlights the mindset with which the young player is approaching the process.
“He has the right mindset. He’s only 19, and there’s still a lot of work to be done,” he added.
From the stands, Claudia watched the game with the pride of a mother who has supported her son throughout his entire journey—fully understanding that reaching the NBA is just one part of the path ahead. “I feel very proud. We’re here for him, whether he plays or not. We know it’s a process—it’s not just about showing up and playing. We know he has to earn trust, but we’re very positive; we’re here to support him,” his mother said, after blessing her son with a kiss on the forehead as the team headed to the locker room following their victory.
Originally from Hermosillo, Sonora, Karim became the first Mexico-born player to be selected in the first round of the NBA draft, taken with the 21st overall pick in 2026. His rights were later acquired by Memphis, the team with which he signed a multi-year contract.
At just 19 years old, the small forward arrives in the NBA after playing professionally in Spain and spending two seasons with the New Zealand Breakers in Australia. His arrival in Memphis offers him a chance to continue his development and pave the way for other young Mexicans who dream of reaching the highest level of basketball.
Meanwhile, his parents are beginning to get to know the city that will serve as their son’s new home for his athletic career. Hiram mentioned that they haven’t had much time to explore Memphis yet, as their routine has been dominated by training sessions and recovery periods since their arrival.
“What little we’ve seen is very nice. The weather is great—especially compared to where we’re from, Hermosillo,” he remarked.
The wait could end soon. Karim will have another chance to make his debut this Friday, when the Grizzlies face the Golden State Warriors. His family hopes to be there again, ready to celebrate every milestone—regardless of whether he gets on the court.
For Hiram and Claudia, what matters most—beyond the minutes played—is being present as their son builds his future in the NBA. And even though the first game passed without him seeing any action, the dream that began in Hermosillo continues to unfold—this time with Memphis as the stage, and his parents as his very first spectators.
