Nearly 50,000 people have filed past the coffin of Pope Francis in St. Peter’s Basilica
(LPL/EN) – Casi 50.000 personas han pasado por delante del féretro del papa Francisco en la basílica de San Pedro del Vaticano hasta la mañana de este jueves, en el segundo de los tres días de exposición antes de su funeral el próximo sábado.
Un total de 48.600 personas se han despedido del pontífice, fallecido este lunes a los 88 años, y pasaron por la capilla ardiente desde su apertura a las 11.00 horas locales (9.00 GMT) de este miércoles hasta las 8.30 hora local (6.30 GMT) de este jueves, según medios vaticanos.La Santa Sede, dada la alta afluencia de fieles, decidió ampliar la apertura al público de la basílica, que permaneció abierta esta madrugada hasta las 5.30 horas (3.30 GMT) y cerró sólo para permitir la reorganización y las tareas de limpieza y volvió abrir a las 7.00 hora (5.00 GMT).
Durante la noche, desde la medianoche hora local (22.00 GMT) hasta las 5.30 (3.30 GMT), fueron 13.000 las personas que rindieron homenaje al pontífice.
El flujo de público que desfila delante del féretro de Francisco es constante y a primera hora de la mañana había miles de personas esperando en distintas filas que se extendían hasta zonas aledañas al Vaticano, en medio de un estricto control de la Policía y la Protección Civil.
A pesar de que este miércoles, en la primera jornada de exposición, la hora prevista de cierre era la medianoche, se decidió dejar la basílica vaticana abierta para permitir que los fieles que habían hecho hasta 3 horas de fila pudieran entrar para homenajear al pontífice argentino.
Este viernes, la basílica cerrará a los fieles a las 19.00 (17.00 GMT) para la ceremonia del cierre del féretro antes del funeral del sábado.
Francisco yace dentro de un féretro de madera, sin el tradicional catafalco, en una plataforma casi a ras del suelo, como él había indicado y situado en el altar de la Confesión frente a la tumba de San Pedro a los pies del baldaquino de Bernini.
El sábado, tras el funeral, su cuerpo será llevado a la basílica romana de Santa María La Mayor para ser enterrado en una capilla, tal y como el pontífice argentino dispuso en vida por ser muy devoto de la Virgen que custodio, la ‘Salus populi romani’.

A total of 48,600 people have paid their respects to the pontiff, who died this Monday at the age of 88. They attended the funeral chapel from its opening at 11:00 a.m. local time (9:00 a.m. GMT) on Wednesday until 8:30 a.m. local time (6:30 a.m. GMT) on Thursday, according to Vatican media. Given the high attendance of the faithful, the Holy See decided to extend the basilica’s opening to the public. The basilica remained open this morning until 5:30 a.m. (3:30 a.m. GMT) and closed only to allow for reorganization and cleaning, reopening at 7:00 a.m. (5:00 a.m. GMT).
During the night, from midnight local time (10:00 p.m. GMT) until 5:30 a.m. (3:30 a.m. GMT), 13,000 people paid tribute to the pontiff. The flow of people filing past Francis’s coffin is constant, and by early morning, thousands of people were waiting in lines that stretched into the Vatican’s outskirts, amid strict police and Civil Protection controls.
Although the scheduled closing time for Wednesday, the first day of the exhibition, was midnight, it was decided to leave the Vatican Basilica open to allow the faithful who had waited in line for up to three hours to enter and pay tribute to the Argentine pontiff.
This Friday, the basilica will close to the faithful at 7:00 PM (5:00 PM GMT) for the closing ceremony before Saturday’s funeral.
Francis lies in a wooden coffin, without the traditional catafalque, on a platform almost at ground level, as he had indicated and placed on the altar of Confession in front of St. Peter’s tomb at the foot of Bernini’s baldachin.
On Saturday, after the funeral, his body will be taken to the Roman Basilica of Santa Maria Maggiore for burial in a chapel, as the Argentine pontiff had intended during his lifetime, given his deep devotion to the Virgin Mary whom he guarded, the “Salus populi Romani.”
