(LPL/WMC) – Este miércoles 7 de mayo es el último día para obtener en EE.UU. la identificación REAL ID —una licencia de conducir actualizada— para quienes quieran seguir volando dentro del país.
Esa es la fecha límite que el Departamento de Seguridad Nacional (DHS, por sus siglas en inglés) ha fijado para hacer cumplir la normativa de la REAL ID tras años de postergación.
La Ley REAL ID, aprobada por el Congreso de EE.UU. en 2005, implementó la recomendación de la Comisión del 11-S para que el Gobierno federal mejorara los estándares de seguridad para la identificación.
“Las tarjetas de identificación REAL ID emitidas por el estado refuerzan significativamente la verificación de identidad, un elemento clave en la seguridad del transporte”, declaró un portavoz de la Administración de Seguridad del Transporte (TSA, por sus siglas en inglés), la agencia de seguridad aérea del DHS cuyos funcionarios verifican la identificación de los pasajeros en los controles de seguridad de los aeropuertos estadounidenses.
Esos controles de identidad preocupan a muchos viajeros potenciales.
La implementación de la REAL ID, que varía según el estado, ha generado confusión entre muchos residentes sobre quién la necesita, qué se requiere para obtenerla y con qué rapidez podrán obtener una nueva identificación ahora que la inminente fecha límite ha incrementado la demanda por parte de las personas que se apresuran a obtenerla antes de viajar.

That is the deadline the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) has set to enforce the REAL ID regulations after years of delay.
The REAL ID Act, passed by the U.S. Congress in 2005, implemented the 9/11 Commission’s recommendation that the federal government improve identification security standards.
“State-issued REAL ID cards significantly strengthen identity verification, a key element of transportation security,” said a spokesperson for the Transportation Security Administration (TSA), the DHS air security agency whose officers check passenger identification at security checkpoints at U.S. airports.
These identity checks are a source of concern for many potential travelers.
The implementation of the REAL ID, which varies by state, has created confusion among many residents about who needs one, what is required to obtain one, and how quickly they will be able to obtain a new ID now that the looming deadline has increased demand from people rushing to obtain one before traveling.
While residents without a REAL ID will be able to drive with current non-compliant licenses and use that ID in other situations, the REAL ID will be essential for boarding flights for travelers who do not have a valid passport, passport card, or other approved identification.
If a person does not have a REAL ID by May 7, they will not be able to board domestic flights in the United States, enter federal or military facilities, or enter nuclear plants.
