Hombre dice que disparó a su novia pensando que era un “hombre con rastas”

(LPL/WREG) – El hombre acusado de matar a tiros a una madre de tres hijos afirma que, cuando disparó el tiro fatal, pensó que la mujer que estaba en su puerta era un “hombre con rastas”.

La familia identificó a la víctima como Jyrah Smith, de 23 años, quien fue encontrada con una herida de bala en la cabeza justo afuera de la puerta principal del apartamento de su novio Deangelo Mitchell el 23 de mayo.

Mitchell declaró a la policía que no reconoció a Smith, quien era su novia. La policía indicó que tiró la escopeta y no intentó ayudar a Smith ni llamar a una ambulancia.
La policía afirma que el disparo se produjo después de una discusión en el segundo piso de uno de los edificios de apartamentos en la cuadra 400 de East Georgia Avenue.

Ponya Dodson, fundadora de Beauty Beyond the Scars, una organización sin fines de lucro dedicada a ayudar a quienes sufren violencia doméstica, ha estado siguiendo la situación y dijo estar de acuerdo con la evaluación de Smith.

2 critically injured in car crash on Millbranch, Winchester Road

(LPL/WREG) – The man charged with shooting a mother of three to death is claiming that when he fired the fatal shot, he thought the woman at his front door was a “male with dreads.”

Family identified the victim as 23-year-old Jyrah Smith, who was found with a gunshot wound to the head right outside the front door of her boyfriend Deangelo Mitchell’s, apartment on May 23.

Mitchell told police he didn’t recognize Smith, who was his girlfriend. Police said he threw the shotgun away and did not attempt to aid Smith or call an ambulance.
Police say the shot rang out following an argument on the second floor of one of the apartment buildings in the 400 block of East Georgia Avenue.

Family members of Smith told police that Mitchell had previously threatened to kill her and her three children — a 1-year-old, a 3-year-old, and a 6-year-old.

However, Jyrah’s father, Tamarkus, said he didn’t know that she’d started dating Mitchell.
“She didn’t tell me about this situation, I didn’t even know she was dating this man,” he said. “They try to keep their personal life away from me because I’m their dad. I’m not their friend.”
When Mitchell opened the door, he shot who he claims he thought was a man with dreads. Mitchell said he was a few feet away from the person he shot and didn’t recognize the person as Smith.

A spent shotgun shell was located inside Mitchell’s apartment, but he was nowhere to be found. Police say Mitchell turned himself in at around 1:20 p.m. that same day.

He told officers that he was asleep and woke up to male and female voices outside his apartment. He said they were knocking on his door, so he armed himself with a shotgun.
Reports say Mitchell threw the gun away after the shooting, and investigators found no evidence that he attempted to aid Smith or call an ambulance.
Memphis Police have confirmed that 27-year-old Deangelo Mitchell has been charged with second-degree murder in connection with Smith’s shooting death.

Records show Mitchell has a history of domestic violence. He was arrested in August 2024 after he allegedly punched the mother of his child in the face repeatedly while she was working at a hotel.

In November 2019, Mitchell was arrested and charged with assault after he allegedly kicked and punched a woman in the head multiple times. In January 2020, he was charged with violating bond agreements in connection with the previous incident. He was allegedly caught banging on his ex-girlfriend’s window.
After learning of Mitchell’s violent past, Tamarkus Smith said Mitchell should have still been locked up the day of his daughter’s death.

“He also had a bond condition that he broke and he should have been in jail as of right now,” Smith said. “But the system failed. If the system did not fail, I believe my daughter would still be here.”
Ponya Dodson, the founder of Beauty Beyond the Scars, a non-profit dedicated to helping those going through domestic violence, has been following the situation and said she agrees with Smith’s assessment.

She told that domestic violence charges aren’t taken as seriously as they should be.
“Then, when you do go to the law and I hear and I see it all the time and nothing’s done or it’s like a slap on the wrist and that person is back,” Dodson said. “I understand what the father is feeling. I hear it, and people don’t look at domestic violence as something that serious because it claims the life of someone every single day.”

Mitchell is scheduled for a preliminary hearing on June 9.

Smith and his family plan to be there as he and his loved ones try to move forward after the tragedy.

“Yesterday, I didn’t cry at all,” Smith said. “But today, I just can’t stop crying. I don’t know why. You have your moments.”
