(LPL/WREG) – US authorities arrested “more than 300,000 migrants” in an irregular situation during the first six months of Donald Trump’s term, the White House reported Tuesday.
Since returning to power in January, the Republican president has implemented a strict immigration policy, conducting raids in courts, homes, and workplaces, which has sparked protests.
Some organizations denounce the conditions in immigration detention centers. In a report, Human Rights Watch (HRW) describes overcrowded cells and migrants sleeping on the floor under neon lights lit day and night, without access to basic hygiene.
During a press conference at the White House, spokesperson Karoline Leavitt highlighted the figures.
“More than 300,000 illegal immigrant criminals have been arrested within our country in the first six months of this administration,” she stated.
He added: “Almost 70% of these arrests are foreign criminals with prior criminal charges or convictions.”
Leavitt also highlighted the reduction in illegal crossings at the border with the United States.
In July, “illegal crossings have again fallen to historic lows,” he said.
According to data from Customs and Border Patrol (CBP), authorities reported “24,628 interceptions nationwide.”
On the border with Mexico, “4,601” illegal crossings were recorded, 24% less than the historic low in June (6,070) and 92% less than in July 2024 (56,400).
Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem emphasized: “History has been made again. The numbers don’t lie: this is the most secure border it has ever been,” according to a CBP statement.
Trump aims to set a record for the expulsion of irregular migrants.
To facilitate this, Noem recently announced the elimination of age limits for entry into Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE).
On Tuesday, ICE announced that it has “officially received more than 100,000 applications from patriotic Americans who wish to join” in helping to remove “criminal aliens.”
