Lanzan campaña para eliminar ICE y cerrar centros de detención de inmigrantes en EE. UU.

(LPL) – Una coalición de organizaciones defensoras de los derechos de los inmigrantes, junto con varios legisladores federales, presentó una nueva campaña nacional denominada “End the ICE Age” (Poner fin a la era de hielo), cuyo objetivo es eliminar el Servicio de Inmigración y Control de Aduanas (ICE) y reformar por completo el sistema de detención y aplicación de las leyes migratorias en Estados Unidos.

La iniciativa respalda el proyecto de ley Melt ICE Act (HR-7190), impulsado en la Cámara de Representantes por la congresista demócrata Delia Ramirez. La propuesta plantea desmantelar tanto ICE como el Department of Homeland Security (DHS), cerrar los centros de detención de inmigrantes y redirigir esos recursos a programas para las comunidades.

Durante la presentación de la campaña, Ramírez afirmó que la agencia “no puede ser reformada” y sostuvo que debe ser reemplazada por un nuevo sistema basado en los derechos humanos y la dignidad de las personas. Según la legisladora, debido a que el Congreso creó tanto al DHS como a ICE, también tiene la autoridad para eliminarlos mediante una nueva legislación.

Por su parte, el congresista Jesús G. ‘Chuy’ García criticó duramente la expansión de las operaciones migratorias bajo la administración Trump y aseguró que el Congreso debe actuar para reformar el sistema de inmigración y detención.

Hasta el momento, el proyecto de ley fue presentado en la Cámara de Representantes, pero enfrenta un camino legislativo complicado en un Congreso con una mayoría republicana en la Cámara Baja, por lo que sus posibilidades de convertirse en ley son inciertas.

Campaign Launched to Abolish ICE and Close Immigrant Detention Centers in the U.S.

(LPL) – A coalition of immigrant rights organizations, alongside several federal lawmakers, has launched a new national campaign titled “End the ICE Age.” The campaign aims to abolish Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) and completely overhaul the U.S. immigration detention and enforcement system.

The initiative supports the “Melt ICE Act” (H.R. 7190), a bill introduced in the House of Representatives by Democratic Congresswoman Delia Ramirez. The proposal calls for dismantling both ICE and the Department of Homeland Security (DHS), closing immigrant detention centers, and redirecting those resources toward community programs.
