“No entiendo qué pasó.

5-year-old boy dies after accidentally shooting himself at home. «Please, put your guns away,» said the mother following her son’s death.

(LPL) – A 5-year-old boy died Monday afternoon after accidentally shooting himself with a firearm inside a home in southeast Shelby County, marking the second death of a minor in the Memphis area in less than a week.

The tragedy comes just days after the death of Winter Jones, a 6-year-old girl who, according to her family, was left inside a daycare van for hours—a case that has also sparked outrage and calls for greater adult responsibility.

In the most recent case, the victim was identified by his mother, Rodnesha Walker, as Tamir Washington, who had recently started kindergarten at Lowrance K-8 School.

The Shelby County Sheriff’s Office reported that deputies responded around 4:40 p.m. to a home in the 7600 block of Baysweet Drive, near Lowrance Road. There, they found the child suffering from a gunshot wound.

Deputies administered first aid until paramedics arrived. Tamir was transported in critical condition to Le Bonheur Children’s Hospital, where he later died.

Family members told local media that the boy had found a gun inside the home and that the shooting was accidental. His mother explained that Tamir had returned from school with his brother. After doing homework and eating dinner, both boys went into a bedroom, where the incident occurred.

«I don’t understand what happened. I really don’t understand,» Walker said tearfully. «One minute we’re picking him up from school, doing homework at the table and eating, and the next he’s in the room with his brother.»

The mother urged adults to keep guns out of the reach of children.

«Please, please, put the guns away. Kids are kids,» she said. The SCSO reported that an adult man was detained following the incident. However, authorities have not disclosed his identity, nor have they confirmed his relationship to the family or whether he will face charges.

Tamir’s death also sent shockwaves through his school community. Terrell Foxe, president of the Lowrance K-8 Parent-Teacher Association, visited the scene and called for greater adult responsibility in protecting children.

“As a community, we have to do more and be responsible,” said Foxe, who also referenced the recent death of Winter Jones.

The two tragedies, occurring just days apart, have once again brought the issue of adult responsibility—and the measures needed to protect children from situations that can end in tragedy—to the forefront.
