Trump warns he will use his presidential veto if Democrats win Congress
(LPL/EN) – U.S. President Donald Trump has stated that he could become «Mr. Veto» should the Democrats secure a majority in Congress following this Tuesday’s midterm elections.
The president emphasized to Fox News that this would be his strategy in the hypothetical scenario where the opposition gains control of both legislative chambers: «I guess I’ll become ‘Mr. Veto,'» he declared.
As reported by the news agency EFE, his initial plan would be to systematically block legislative initiatives put forward by a Democratic majority, with the aim of subsequently forcing them to negotiate agreements.
«It wouldn’t be the first time. You have a president who doesn’t have the House or the Senate; they send proposals, you veto them, and eventually—after a month or two of vetoing everything—they come to the table, and you reach a deal,» Trump explained, describing the negotiation dynamic he intends to employ.
Despite outlining this confrontational roadmap, the U.S. president expressed confidence that Republicans would retain legislative control after the elections, which would make it unnecessary to resort to this obstructionist strategy.
