Trump Shut Down the Kennedy Center Because He Couldn’t Put His Name on It
(LPL/CNN) – The Kennedy Center, Washington’s prestigious performing arts center, was shut down by order of U.S. President Donald Trump after a judge blocked plans to rename the institution after the Republican leader.
The iconic building, located on the banks of the Potomac River, was fenced off to prevent access one day after the board of directors approved its immediate closure. Security concerns and the need for repairs were cited as reasons.
Yesterday, Federal Judge Christopher Cooper blocked the latest attempt to rename the institution after Trump.
Management argues that the building requires extensive repairs due to its deteriorated state. However, they will only be able to raise the necessary funds for renovations if the institution bears the Republican leader’s name.
On Tuesday, Trump confirmed in a post on his Truth Social account that the renovation would not go ahead. Consequently, the center will not reopen its doors if the courts continue to block the name change.
After returning to the White House in January 2025, the president overhauled the Kennedy Center’s board of directors and appointed himself as its head. He also harshly criticized the venue’s programming, labeling it «woke» (progressive).
The new management went so far as to add Trump’s name to the façade, but a federal judge ordered its removal, ruling that changing the name required Congressional approval.
In August, the board approved a new approach to displaying the president’s name on the façade via an inscription reading «Restored and Renovated by President Donald J. Trump.» However, the judge blocked this move again on Tuesday, prompting management to approve the building’s closure.
Trump’s efforts to take control of the institution led to performance cancellations and a drop in ticket revenue. The Kennedy Center opened in 1971 in honor of President John F. Kennedy, who was assassinated in 1963. It is one of the United States’ premier cultural complexes, featuring programming that includes opera, symphonic music, theater, ballet, and contemporary dance, among other disciplines.
