Padre de niño de 5 años que murió tras dispararse con un arma enfrenta cargos de homicidio

(LPL) – El padre de Tamir Washington, el niño de 5 años que murió después de dispararse accidentalmente en la cabeza con un arma de fuego, enfrenta ahora cargos criminales relacionados con la muerte del menor.

La Oficina del Sheriff del Condado de Shelby informó que Marquavious Washington, de 24 años, fue detenido y acusado de homicidio por negligencia criminal, poner en peligro imprudentemente a una persona con un arma mortal y negligencia infantil agravada.

El incidente ocurrió el lunes 17 de agosto, alrededor de las 4:40 p.m., en una vivienda de Baysweet Drive, en el sureste del condado de Shelby.

Los agentes encontraron a Tamir con una herida de bala. El menor fue trasladado de emergencia al hospital infantil Le Bonheur, donde posteriormente murió.

De acuerdo con la investigación, Tamir encontró un arma de fuego perteneciente a su padre y se disparó accidentalmente mientras estaba dentro de la vivienda. Las autoridades determinaron que el arma no estaba almacenada de manera segura.

La madre del niño, Rodnesha Walker, había contado que Tamir acababa de regresar de la escuela, había hecho su tarea y estaba comiendo antes de entrar a una habitación con su hermano. Posteriormente ocurrió el disparo.

La tragedia provocó un llamado de la familia y de miembros de la comunidad para mantener las armas fuera del alcance de los niños.

El sheriff Floyd Bonner Jr. reiteró la importancia de almacenar las armas de manera segura y bajo llave para evitar que los menores puedan acceder a ellas.

Tamir había comenzado recientemente el año escolar en Lowrance K-8.

(LPL) – The father of Tamir Washington—the 5-year-old boy who died after accidentally shooting himself in the head with a firearm—now faces criminal charges related to the child’s death.

The Shelby County Sheriff’s Office reported that Marquavious Washington, 24, was arrested and charged with criminally negligent homicide, reckless endangerment with a deadly weapon, and aggravated child neglect.

The incident occurred on Monday, August 17, around 4:40 p.m., at a home on Baysweet Drive in southeast Shelby County.

Deputies found Tamir suffering from a gunshot wound. The child was rushed to Le Bonheur Children’s Hospital, where he later died.

According to the investigation, Tamir found a firearm belonging to his father and accidentally shot himself while inside the home. Authorities determined that the weapon was not safely stored.

The boy’s mother, Rodnesha Walker, had said that Tamir had just returned from school, finished his homework, and was eating before he went into a room with his brother. The shooting occurred shortly thereafter.

The tragedy prompted calls from the family and community members to keep guns out of the reach of children.

Sheriff Floyd Bonner Jr. reiterated the importance of storing firearms safely and under lock and key to prevent children from accessing them.

Tamir had recently started the school year at Lowrance K-8.
