Comenzó la misa previa al cónclave para elegir al nuevo papa

The mass before the conclave to elect the Pope has begun

(LPL/AFP) – La misa «Pro eligendo pontifice», que oficia el decano del colegio cardenalicio, Giovanni Battista Re, comenzó este miércoles en la basílica de San Pedro ante la presencia de los 133 cardenales que desde esta tarde se encerrarán en cónclave para elegir al 267 papa de la historia de la Iglesia.

También asistieron a la ceremonia religiosa, que empezó a las 10.00 hora local (08.00 GMT), los cardenales mayores de 80 años, que no pueden entrar en la capilla Sixtina, así como numerosos obispos, sacerdotes y religiosas, además de fieles.

Se trata de una misa para pedir a Dios que ayude en la elección del papa y durante la ceremonia los fieles pedirán en varios idiomas -francés, suajili, portugués, malabar, chino y alemán- por los cardenales llamados a elegir al sucesor de Francisco, por todos los pueblos de la tierra, por los oprimidos por el odio y por la familia.

Fue relevante la homilía que pronunció el cardenal decano, su último discurso público antes de la elección del nuevo papa y en el que se suele trazar el perfil que en su opinión debe tener el próximo pontífice, junto a los criterios que deben guiar a los cardenales durante la elección.

Tras la misa, los cardenales se retiraron a la residencia de Santa Marta, donde se alojarán durante los días que dure el cónclave y en cuyas habitaciones, que fueron sorteadas, los purpurados entraron desde ayer por la tarde y a primera hora de hoy.

A las 16.15 hora local (14.15 GMT), los 133 cardenales se reunirán en la capilla Paulina y desde allí se dirigirán en procesión a la capilla Sixtina, donde entrarán a las 16.30 horas local (15.30 GMT).

Allí, tras llevar a cabo el juramento, se encerarán en la capilla Síxtina para después proceder a la primera y única votación de la jornada de cónclave, cuyo resultado se espera con la primera fumata en torno a las 19.00 horas (17.00 GMT).

Also attending the religious ceremony, which began at 10:00 a.m. local time (08:00 GMT), were cardinals over 80, who are not permitted to enter the Sistine Chapel, as well as numerous bishops, priests, nuns, and the faithful.

This is a Mass to ask God for help in the election of the Pope, and during the ceremony, the faithful will pray in several languages—French, Swahili, Portuguese, Malayalam, Chinese, and German—for the cardinals called to elect Francis’s successor, for all the peoples of the earth, for those oppressed by hatred, and for the family.

The homily given by the Cardinal Dean was significant. It was his last public speech before the election of the new Pope, and in it he usually outlines the profile he believes the next pontiff should have, along with the criteria that should guide the cardinals during the election.

After the Mass, the cardinals retired to the Santa Marta residence, where they will stay for the duration of the conclave. The cardinals entered the rooms, which were randomly selected, yesterday afternoon and early today.

At 4:15 p.m. local time (2:15 p.m. GMT), the 133 cardinals will gather in the Pauline Chapel and from there will process to the Sistine Chapel, where they will enter at 4:30 p.m. local time (3:30 p.m. GMT).

There, after taking the oath, they will wax in the Sistine Chapel and then proceed to the first and only vote of the day of conclave, the result of which is expected with the first fumarata around 7:00 p.m. (5:00 p.m. GMT).
