Falleció el reverendo Jesse Jackson, dos veces candidato presidencial en Estados Unidos

(LPL/EN) – El reverendo Jesse Jackson, veterano activista por los derechos civiles, ministro bautista y dos veces aspirante a la candidatura presidencial en Estados Unidos, falleció este martes a los 84 años de edad, según informó su familia.
“Con profunda tristeza anunciamos el fallecimiento del líder de los Derechos Civiles y fundador de la Coalición Rainbow PUSH, el Honorable Reverendo Jesse Louis Jackson”, escribió su familia en un comunicado en Instagram, en el que confirmó que murió este martes, “rodeado de su familia”.
“Nuestro padre fue un líder servicial, no solo para nuestra familia, sino también para los oprimidos, los que no tienen voz y los marginados de todo el mundo”, se explica la nota, en la que no se informa de las causas de la muerte.

“Lo compartimos con el mundo y, a cambio, el mundo se convirtió en parte de nuestra familia extendida”, precisó la familia.

También destacó del reverendo “su inquebrantable compromiso con la justicia, la igualdad y los derechos humanos” ya que “contribuyó a forjar un movimiento global por la libertad y la dignidad”.
“Incansable agente de cambio, elevó la voz de quienes no la tenían, desde sus campañas presidenciales en la década de 1980 hasta la movilización de millones de personas para animarles a registrarse para votar, dejando una huella imborrable en la historia”, precisó.

Jackson reveló que padecía Parkinson en 2017. Fue tratado como paciente ambulatorio en Northwestern Medicine en Chicago durante al menos dos años antes de compartir el diagnóstico con el público.

La icónica figura del movimiento en favor de los derechos civiles en Estados Unidos, dejó oficialmente en 2023 su organización Rainbow PUSH Coalition, que fundó en 1971 en defensa de esos derechos y de la justicia internacional.

Jackson fundó Operation PUSH en 1971, tres años después del asesinato de su compañero de activismo Martin Luther King en Memphis, que él presenció.

En 1996, su organización pasó a llamarse Rainbow PUSH Coalition tras fusionarse con The National Rainbow Coalition. El grupo tiene como misión proteger, defender y ganar derechos civiles y se define como una organización multirracial, multitemática, progresiva e internacional, que busca el cambio social.

Jackson, nacido en Greenville (Carolina del Sur) de una madre soltera, fue en noviembre de 2017 que anunció su enfermedad, y reconoció ya que veía cada vez más difícil completar sus actividades cotidianas, que se habían convertido en un “reto”.

Jackson fue hospitalizado en noviembre para recibir tratamiento por una enfermedad neurodegenerativa rara y particularmente grave, la parálisis supranuclear progresiva (PSP), según Rainbow PUSH Coalition.

Reverend Jesse Jackson, Two-Time US Presidential Candidate, Dies

(LPL/EN) – Reverend Jesse Jackson, a veteran civil rights activist, Baptist minister, and two-time US presidential candidate, died Tuesday at the age of 84, according to his family.

“It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of civil rights leader and founder of the Rainbow PUSH Coalition, the Honorable Reverend Jesse Louis Jackson,” his family wrote in a statement on Instagram, confirming that he died Tuesday, “surrounded by his family.”

“Our father was a serving leader, not only to our family, but also to the oppressed, the voiceless, and the marginalized throughout the world,” the statement explained, without disclosing the cause of death.

“We shared him with the world, and in return, the world became part of our extended family,” the family added.

The statement also highlighted the Reverend’s “unwavering commitment to justice, equality, and human rights,” noting that he “helped forge a global movement for freedom and dignity.”

“A tireless agent of change, he amplified the voices of the voiceless, from his presidential campaigns in the 1980s to mobilizing millions to register to vote, leaving an indelible mark on history,” it added.

Jackson revealed he had Parkinson’s disease in 2017. He was treated as an outpatient at Northwestern Medicine in Chicago for at least two years before sharing his diagnosis publicly.

The iconic figure of the civil rights movement in the United States officially retired his organization, the Rainbow PUSH Coalition, in 2023. He founded the organization in 1971 to advocate for civil rights and international justice.

Jackson founded Operation PUSH in 1971, three years after the assassination of his fellow activist Martin Luther King Jr. in Memphis, which he witnessed.

In 1996, his organization became the Rainbow PUSH Coalition after merging with the National Rainbow Coalition. The group’s mission is to protect, defend, and win civil rights, and it defines itself as a multiracial, multiissue, progressive, and international organization that seeks social change.

Jackson, born in Greenville, South Carolina, to a single mother, announced his illness in November 2017, acknowledging that he was finding it increasingly difficult to complete his daily activities, which had become a “challenge.”

Jackson was hospitalized in November to receive treatment for a rare and particularly serious neurodegenerative disease, progressive supranuclear palsy (PSP), according to the Rainbow PUSH Coalition.
