Joven recibe 18 años de prisión por su papel en la muerte del oficial de la Policía de Memphis Joseph McKinney

(LPL) – Un joven de 19 años, identificado como Devaron Taylor, se declaró culpable este viernes por su participación en el tiroteo que cobró la vida del oficial de policía de Memphis, Joseph McKinney, en abril de 2024.

De acuerdo con la Fiscalía del Condado de Shelby, Taylor fue sentenciado a 18 años de prisión sin derecho a libertad condicional. Durante la audiencia, los familiares del oficial McKinney ofrecieron emotivas declaraciones sobre el impacto de su pérdida.

El incidente ocurrió la madrugada del 12 de abril de 2024, cuando los oficiales respondieron a un reporte de vehículo sospechoso en Horn Lake Road y Charter Avenue, en el suroeste de Memphis. Al acercarse al automóvil, los agentes fueron recibidos con disparos y respondieron al fuego.

Dos oficiales resultaron heridos y fueron trasladados al Regional One Hospital, donde el oficial McKinney falleció a causa de sus heridas. Un tercer agente fue rozado por una bala y recibió atención médica en el lugar.

Los sospechosos, un joven de 18 años identificado como Jaylen Lobley y el entonces menor Devaron Taylor, también fueron alcanzados por disparos. Lobley no sobrevivió. Según las autoridades, Lobley había sido liberado bajo palabra en marzo de 2024 por delitos previos.

Las investigaciones revelaron que Taylor portaba un arma totalmente automática y fue quien abrió fuego primero, tras las órdenes de los oficiales de mostrar las manos. Aunque no fue el autor del disparo que mató a McKinney, las autoridades señalaron que su acción desató el intercambio de balas que resultó en la muerte del oficial.

“Si bien el disparo fatal no provino del arma de Taylor, su decisión de abrir fuego contra los oficiales desencadenó la cadena de eventos que llevó a la muerte del oficial McKinney,” indicó un portavoz de la Fiscalía.

El oficial Joseph McKinney se había unido al Departamento de Policía de Memphis en 2020 y era graduado de Munford High School en 2016.

(LPL) – A 19-year-old man, Devaron Taylor, pleaded guilty on Friday for his involvement in the shooting that claimed the life of Memphis Police Officer Joseph McKinney in April 2024.

According to the Shelby County District Attorney’s Office, Taylor was sentenced to 18 years in prison with no chance of probation. During the hearing, McKinney’s family members delivered emotional statements about the impact of his death.

The incident occurred in the early hours of April 12, 2024, when officers responded to a suspicious vehicle call at Horn Lake Road and Charter Avenue in southwest Memphis. As they approached the car, officers were met with gunfire and returned fire.

Two officers were hit and taken to Regional One Hospital, where Officer McKinney later died from his injuries. A third officer was grazed by a bullet and treated at the scene.

The suspects, an 18-year-old identified as Jaylen Lobley and then-17-year-old Devaron Taylor, were also shot and taken to the hospital. Lobley did not survive. Authorities later confirmed that Lobley had been released on his own recognizance in March 2024 for previous offenses.

Investigators determined that Taylor was carrying a fully automatic weapon and was the one who fired first after officers ordered him to show his hands. While Taylor did not fire the shot that killed McKinney, his actions triggered the exchange of gunfire that led to the officer’s death.

“While the fatal round did not come from Taylor’s weapon, his decision to open fire on officers set in motion the chain of events that led to Officer McKinney’s death,” said a spokesperson for the DA’s Office.

Officer Joseph McKinney had been with the Memphis Police Department since 2020 and was a 2016 graduate of Munford High School.
