La ciudad de Memphis celebra el Día de Martin Luther King Jr. con marchas, arte y servicio comunitario

(LPL) – Este lunes 19 de enero, Memphis se prepara para conmemorar el Día de Martin Luther King Jr. con una serie de actividades culturales, educativas y de servicio comunitario que honran el legado del líder por la igualdad y la justicia. La ciudad ofrecerá eventos para todos los públicos, desde familias hasta estudiantes y residentes comprometidos con la comunidad.

El National Civil Rights Museum, ubicado en el histórico Lorraine Motel, será el epicentro de las celebraciones. Durante todo el día, de 8:00 a.m. a 6:00 p.m., el museo abrirá sus puertas con admisión gratuita, gracias al patrocinio de FedEx. Los asistentes podrán disfrutar de presentaciones en vivo, actuaciones de coros y grupos estudiantiles, así como de puestos de comida local que reflejan la riqueza gastronómica de Memphis.

Además, habrá actividades familiares, estaciones de arte y manualidades inspiradas en los valores de King, y un Pabellón de Recursos Comunitarios con información y servicios de organizaciones cívicas y de salud. También se ofrecerán oportunidades de servicio comunitario, como donación de sangre y recolección de alimentos, fomentando la idea de que este feriado sea un “día de servicio, no un día libre”.

Paralelamente, se realizará la marcha comunitaria anual del Día de MLK por el centro de la ciudad, comenzando alrededor de las 8:00 a.m. Esta caminata reúne a residentes, organizaciones locales y líderes comunitarios para celebrar la unidad, la fe y el compromiso social que caracterizaron la vida de King.

Además, Temple Israel organizará su MLK Day of Service, donde voluntarios trabajarán en proyectos comunitarios como armar canastas de apoyo para personas en situación de calle y otras iniciativas locales que buscan generar un impacto positivo.

Memphis Celebrates Martin Luther King Jr. Day with Marches, Arts, and Community Service

(LPL) – On January 19, Memphis will celebrate Martin Luther King Jr. Day with a series of cultural, educational, and community service activities honoring the legacy of the civil rights leader. The city will offer events for all audiences, from families and students to residents engaged in community work.

The National Civil Rights Museum, located at the historic Lorraine Motel, will be the centerpiece of the celebrations. From 8:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m., the museum will open its doors with free admission, thanks to FedEx sponsorship. Attendees can enjoy live performances, student and choir presentations, as well as local food vendors showcasing Memphis cuisine.

There will also be family-friendly activities, arts and crafts stations inspired by King’s values, and a Community Resource Pavilion offering information and services from civic and health organizations. Opportunities for community service—including blood donations and food drives—will also be available, promoting the idea of the holiday as a “day of service, not a day off.”

At the same time, the city will host the annual community MLK Day march downtown, beginning around 8:00 a.m., bringing together residents, local organizations, and community leaders to celebrate unity, faith, and social commitment.

Additionally, Temple Israel will organize a MLK Day of Service, where volunteers will work on projects such as assembling care packages for the homeless and supporting other local initiatives.

Throughout the weekend and the week leading up to MLK Day, several organizations, including MICAH Memphis, will host a MLK Weekend of Action, with educational activities, community dialogues, and cultural celebrations that highlight the ongoing importance of social justice and King’s legacy.
