México entrega a EE.UU. a Zhi Dong Zhang, ciudadano chino acusado de tráfico millonario de cocaína y fentanilo

(LPL/CNN) – Autoridades de México entregaron al ciudadano chino Zhi Dong Zhang, también conocido como “Brother Wang”, a Estados Unidos. El hombre está acusado en ese país de tráfico de drogas y lavado de dinero por cientos de millones de dólares

Dong Zhang fue recapturado en Cuba y extraditado esta semana a México, de donde se había fugado en julio.

“Este individuo había sido detenido en Cuba el 31 de julio de 2025, por delitos cometidos en el territorio nacional de falsificación de documentos y tráfico de personas, previstos en el Código Penal cubano, y se encontraba bajo la medida cautelar de prisión provisional”, indicó el Ministerio de Relaciones Exteriores de Cuba en un comunicado.
El secretario de Seguridad y Protección Ciudadana (SSPC) de México, Omar García Harfuch, confirmó este jueves su traslado a Estados Unidos. “El día de hoy fue entregado a las autoridades de Estados Unidos”, indicó García Harfuch en un mensaje publicado en su cuenta de X.
Harfuch agradeció al Gobierno de Cuba “por su valiosa colaboración” para arrestar a Dong Zhang, “identificado como responsable del tráfico internacional de droga, lavado de dinero y alianzas con grupos criminales con presencia en América, Europa y Asia, quien cuenta con una notificación roja de Interpol”.

Dong Zhang es considerado presunto responsable de exportar, transportar y distribuir más de 1.000 kilogramos de cocaína, 1.800 de fentanilo y 600 de metanfetaminas, así como de lavar más de US$ 150 millones anuales de ganancias ilícitas, según detallaron autoridades de México, que añadieron que sus actividades ilegales “se realizaban en Estados Unidos, Centroamérica, Sudamérica, América Central, Europa, China y Japón” y que “ha sido señalado de formar alianzas con organizaciones delictivas de México para realizar al trasiego”.

En julio, la Fiscalía General de México y la Fiscalía de Quintana Roo, un estado del Caribe mexicano, informaron que Zhi Dong Zhang había escapado de custodia. Mediante un operativo de búsqueda lograron hallarlo en Cuba, donde fue arrestado.

CNN busca saber si Zhi Dong Zhang cuenta con representación legal y cómo se declara por los cargos en su contra.

Dong Zhang fue acusado en un tribunal federal de Atlanta en 2022 por tráfico de drogas y lavado de dinero. Según detalla la agencia AP, documentos judiciales presentados en este caso describen una red de narcotráfico presuntamente liderada por Zhang que importaba cocaína y fentanilo a Estados Unidos y luego los distribuía a través de centros en las áreas metropolitanas de Atlanta y Los Ángeles.

Mexico Hands Over Zhi Dong Zhang, Chinese National Accused of Million-Dollar Cocaine and Fentanyl Trafficking to the US

(LPL/CNN) – Mexican authorities handed over Chinese national Zhi Dong Zhang, also known as “Brother Wang,” to the United States. The man is accused in that country of drug trafficking and money laundering worth hundreds of millions of dollars.

Dong Zhang was recaptured in Cuba and extradited this week to Mexico, from where he had fled in July.

“This individual had been detained in Cuba on July 31, 2025, for crimes committed in the national territory, including document forgery and human trafficking, as provided for in the Cuban Penal Code, and was under the precautionary measure of provisional imprisonment,” the Cuban Ministry of Foreign Affairs said in a statement.
Mexico’s Secretary of Security and Citizen Protection (SSPC), Omar García Harfuch, confirmed his transfer to the United States on Thursday. “Today he was handed over to the United States authorities,” García Harfuch said in a message posted on his X account.
Harfuch thanked the Cuban government “for its valuable collaboration” in arresting Dong Zhang, “identified as responsible for international drug trafficking, money laundering, and alliances with criminal groups with a presence in the Americas, Europe, and Asia, and who has an Interpol red notice.”

Dong Zhang is considered to be allegedly responsible for exporting, transporting, and distributing more than 1,000 kilograms of cocaine, 1,800 kilograms of fentanyl, and 600 kilograms of methamphetamine, as well as laundering more than US$150 million in illicit profits annually, according to Mexican authorities. They added that his illegal activities “were carried out in the United States, Central America, South America, Central America, Europe, China, and Japan” and that “he has been accused of forming alliances with Mexican criminal organizations to carry out the trafficking.”

In July, the Mexican Attorney General’s Office and the Prosecutor’s Office of Quintana Roo, a state in the Mexican Caribbean, reported that Zhi Dong Zhang had escaped from custody. A search operation found him in Cuba, where he was arrested.

CNN is seeking to learn if Zhi Dong Zhang has legal representation and how he will plead to the charges against him.

Dong Zhang was indicted in federal court in Atlanta in 2022 on drug trafficking and money laundering charges. According to the Associated Press, court documents filed in this case describe a drug trafficking network allegedly led by Zhang that imported cocaine and fentanyl into the United States and then distributed them through hubs in the Atlanta and Los Angeles metropolitan areas.
