Father accused of murdering his 3-year-old son confessed to hiding the body in a suitcase; he appears in court this Wednesday
(LPL) – New court documents have revealed shocking details regarding the death of Joseph Martinez, the 3-year-old boy found dead near Wolf River Harbor in Memphis. According to the investigation, his father, Saul Martinez, confessed to murdering the child, placing his body inside a brown suitcase, and abandoning it in a wooded area near the river.
The 22-year-old man faces charges of first-degree murder, murder during the commission of aggravated child abuse, aggravated child abuse, abuse of a corpse, and tampering with evidence. He is scheduled to appear in Shelby County Criminal Court this Wednesday morning, where he will formally face the accusations.
According to the affidavit filed by the Memphis Police, the investigation began as a missing child case after Joseph’s mother reported that she did not know her son’s whereabouts and that the last time she had seen him was with his father on Saturday.
One key statement came from Octavio Martinez, the boy’s grandfather and the accused’s father. According to the documents, Octavio stated that Saul had held physical custody of Joseph and his other son for approximately three weeks.
The grandfather recounted that, around midnight on Saturday, Saul asked him for money and took his car keys without permission. Before Saul left, the grandfather said he saw his son dragging a large brown suitcase to the vehicle and placing it in the passenger seat before driving away.
Hours later, Saul returned to drop off the keys, but on Monday morning, he came back to the house without Joseph. When his father asked where the boy was, Saul initially replied that he was with friends. However, after being pressed, he finally confessed to family members that the child had died and that he had left the body at the Wolf River. After being questioned by detectives, Saul Martinez led officers to a wooded area near Second Street and Plum Avenue, where he pointed out the spot where he had abandoned the suitcase. Inside, investigators found the body of young Joseph.
The accused was subsequently taken to the Homicide Division, where he waived his constitutional rights and confessed to killing his son and disposing of the body by hiding it in the suitcase.
As the legal proceedings move forward, the child’s family and friends held a candlelight vigil to honor his memory. Dressed in clothing featuring Spider-Man—Joseph’s favorite superhero—they remembered the boy as a cheerful and affectionate child. His grandmother, Valerie Rios, stated that the family is devastated and lamented that Saul never sought help if he felt overwhelmed by the situation. «We are completely shattered. We haven’t even been able to begin picking up the pieces,» she said during the tribute. The family has also launched a fundraising campaign to cover funeral expenses.
