78-Year-Old Man Accused of Killing Another Over a Six-Dollar Debt in Memphis

(LPL) – A 78-year-old man has been arrested and charged with first-degree murder after allegedly shooting and killing another man during an argument over a debt of just six dollars in North Memphis.

The incident occurred on Friday, October 30, shortly after 4:30 p.m., in front of a home in the 800 block of Crockett Place, where officers from the Memphis Police Department (MPD) responded to a report of gunfire.

Upon arrival, officers found Micheal Cook lying on the sidewalk with multiple gunshot wounds. The victim was pronounced dead at the scene. Louis Bynum was also found at the scene and was subsequently identified as the person allegedly responsible for the homicide.

According to the police report, a witness identified Bynum as the individual who shot Cook. The witness stated that they saw the 78-year-old man demand that the victim pay him six dollars. When Cook refused, Bynum allegedly threatened him, pulled out a revolver, and opened fire.

According to the same account, after Cook fell to the ground, the accused continued to shoot him several more times.

Another witness told investigators that they had spoken with Bynum shortly before the homicide. During that conversation, the man reportedly stated that he was going to end up in prison and that he was going to kill someone because they owed him six dollars. The witness explained that they went back inside their home and, shortly thereafter, heard multiple gunshots. Upon coming back outside, the witness reported seeing Bynum standing over Cook’s body.

Following the shooting, several neighbors approached the alleged assailant, knocked him to the ground, and took away his firearm. They also removed a weapon that, according to the report, the victim had been carrying. Bynum faces charges of first-degree murder, use of a firearm during the commission of a felony, and possession of a weapon by a convicted felon.

As of now, no bail has been set, and he is scheduled to appear in court on Tuesday morning.
