Oficial hispana de la Policía de Memphis: “MPD no está trabajando con ICE pero igual no podemos impedir que hagan su trabajo”

(LPL) – La oficial del Departamento de Policía de Memphis Kathya Buruca, indicó en una entrevista con un medio de comunicación local que el MPD no está trabajando directamente con ICE, pero sí están colaborando con los más de 700 agentes de distintas agencias federales que llegaron a la ciudad desde el pasado 29 de septiembre para conformar el “Memphis Safe Task Force.

“Estamos trabajando con diferencias agencias, eso no es un secreto, ya se sabe. Lo que pasa es que cuando nosotros hacemos una parada de tránsito, tenemos que informar por radio lo que está pasando, quien es el conductor y ellos (otras agencias) también lo escuchan. Cuando decimos que detuvimos a un hispano, ellos vienen y desafortunadamente no podemos hacer nada para impedir que hagan su procedimiento. Si ICE llega, ellos harán su trabajo”, indicó la oficial hispana.

Según cifras aportadas por el departamento de alguaciles, hasta el pasado miércoles el operativo federal había dejado más de 900 arrestos en total y casi el 20% de ellos (156) eran por ICE.

La oficial Buruca también aprovechó el espacio para darle algunas recomendaciones a la comunidad hispana en estos tiempos difíciles. “Yo sé que sienten que los están cazando, pero traten de tener todos sus documentos en regla (placas, aseguranza), no hablen por teléfono mientras manejen, pónganse el cinturón de seguridad y respeten las señales de tránsito para que no los paren”, dijo. “Hay cosas que se pueden evitar”.

Igualmente instó a todos a conocer sus derechos al momento. “Sepan sus derechos, cuando vengan a tocar tu puerta, cuando los paren en la calle, sepan que tienen derechos”, finalizó.

According to figures provided by the Sheriff’s Department, as of last Wednesday, the federal operation had resulted in more than 900 arrests in total, and almost 20% of them (156) were by ICE.

Officer Buruca also took the opportunity to offer some recommendations to the Hispanic community during these difficult times. “I know you feel like you’re being hunted, but try to have all your documents in order (license plates, insurance), don’t talk on the phone while driving, wear your seatbelt, and obey traffic signs so you don’t get stopped,” she said. “There are things that can be avoided.”

She also urged everyone to know their rights immediately. “Know your rights. When they come knocking on your door, when they stop you on the street, know that you have rights,” she concluded.
