Hombre muere al salvar a su esposa de un ataque de pitbulls en Parkway Village

(LPL) – Un hombre murió y su esposa resultó herida tras ser atacados por dos perros en la mañana del lunes, frente a su residencia en el vecindario de Parkway Village.

Según el Departamento de Policía de Memphis (MPD), los agentes respondieron a una llamada por un posible animal herido poco antes de las 11:00 a. m. en la cuadra 5000 de Melanie Avenue. Al llegar, encontraron a Sharon Williams en el patio delantero recibiendo atención médica por parte del Departamento de Bomberos de Memphis (MFD).

Al revisar el patio trasero, los agentes encontraron a Robert Williams tendido boca arriba mientras los dos perros, descritos como pitbulls, lo atacaban agresivamente. Los oficiales dispararon contra los animales, matándolos. Uno de los perros fue hallado en el mismo patio trasero, y el otro en el patio delantero de una vivienda en la cuadra 2800 de Curtis Street.

Robert fue trasladado en estado crítico al hospital Regional One, donde más tarde fue declarado muerto. Presentaba múltiples heridas por mordeduras. Su esposa también sufrió varias lesiones en las piernas y la cadera que podrían requerir cirugía, pero se espera que se recupere.

Vecinos dijeron que los perros habían sido vistos rondando el área en días recientes. Patricia Randolph, residente cercana, contó que escuchó gritos esa mañana. “Estaba en mi casa cuando vi la cola de un perro beige. Llamé al 911 y salí corriendo a gritarle a la policía que estaban en el patio”, relató.

Los Servicios de Animales de Memphis acudieron al lugar para retirar los cuerpos de los perros y revisar si tenían microchip, pero no se pudo identificar a un dueño. Según Randolph, aunque los animales no llevaban collar, se notaba que estaban bien alimentados.

En la Iglesia Bautista Ridgeway, a pocos minutos del lugar de los hechos, el pastor principal Mark LaRue lamentó la pérdida de Robert, quien, junto a Sharon, era una parte activa del coro de la iglesia. “Robert tocaba el bajo y Sharon cantaba y tocaba la pandereta. Es una pérdida enorme para todos nosotros”, expresó.

Randolph pidió que se tomen medidas para que los responsables de los animales rindan cuentas. “No es justo que alguien pierda la vida por la negligencia de un dueño irresponsable”, declaró.

La investigación sigue en curso.

Man dies saving his wife from a pit bull attack in Parkway Village

(LPL) – A man was killed and his wife injured after being attacked by two dogs Monday morning outside their home in the Parkway Village neighborhood.

According to the Memphis Police Department (MPD), officers responded to a call about a possible injured animal shortly before 11:00 a.m. on the 5000 block of Melanie Avenue. Upon arrival, they found Sharon Williams in the front yard receiving medical attention from the Memphis Fire Department (MFD).

In the backyard, officers discovered Robert Williams lying face up as two pit bulls were aggressively attacking him. Police shot and killed both dogs. One was found in the backyard near Robert, and the other in the front yard of a home on the 2800 block of Curtis Street.

Robert was transported in critical condition to Regional One Health, where he was later pronounced dead. He had suffered multiple bite wounds. His wife also sustained several injuries to her legs and hip, which may require surgery, but she is expected to recover.

Neighbors reported that the dogs had been seen roaming the area in recent days. Patricia Randolph, a nearby resident, said she heard the couple screaming. “I was sitting at my doorway when I saw the tail of a tan dog. I thought, ‘There’s a dog on him,’ so I went inside, grabbed my phone, and called 911,” she said. “The fire truck and a patrol car showed up, and I yelled, ‘They’re in the yard! They’re in the yard!’ The police ran and handled it.”

Memphis Animal Services arrived at the scene to remove the dogs’ bodies and check for microchips, but no owner was identified. Randolph noted that while the dogs were not wearing collars, they appeared well-fed.

At Ridgeway Baptist Church, just minutes from the Williams’ home, Senior Pastor Mark LaRue reflected on the couple’s role in the church choir. “Robert played bass, and Sharon sang and played the tambourine. It’s a great loss for us,” he said. “I encourage those who knew them to support Sharon, pray for her, and remember that Robert is in the Lord’s arms tonight.”

Randolph called for accountability from whoever owns the dogs. “It’s not fair to the neighborhood. Someone has died because of negligence. These dogs clearly belonged to someone,” she said.

The investigation remains ongoing.
